Challenge

Student-athletes are expected to perform at a high level physically, mentally, and academically, yet they are rarely given tools that help them understand, communicate, and manage their mental readiness in real time. Existing performance technology often prioritizes data collection over athlete agency, lacks transparency around privacy, and fails to translate biometric insights into meaningful, supportive actions.

The challenge was to design a system that supports student-athletes’ mental performance through the 5 C’s—Commitment, Concentration, Confidence, Control, and Communication—while integrating biometric data, apparel-based technology, and clear privacy controls in a way that is ethical, empowering, and easy to use.

What are the 5 C's?

The 5 C’s—Commitment, Concentration, Confidence, Control, and Communication—form the foundation of Huddle’s approach to supporting student-athlete mental performance. This framework translates established sport-psychology principles into practical, measurable behaviors that athletes can recognize, track, and improve over time. Rather than treating mental performance as abstract or reactive, the 5 C’s provide a structured system that supports game readiness, emotional regulation, and team connection both on and off the field.

User Personas

The following persona’s consist of three different high school students; Jordan who loves sports and wants to help her team grow, Alex who prefers individual sports and wants recognition, and Riley who doesn't enjoy sports at all but wants to improve her health long-term.

Process & Architecture

Sketches

The design process consisted of different sketches for different aspects of this project ranging from patch ideas, screen stills, emojis, possible apparel ideas, logo iterations and wireframes.

Wireframes

Below you will be able to see the basic wireframe structure that helped shape the app. Most screens ended up getting layout changes due to readability when it comes to guidelines, or just to make them come across easier.

Branding

Logo

huddle's branding utilizes a wordmark and a lettermark of it's "h" in cases where the full name wouldn't work.

Design System

Below you will see the design system for huddle. This system includes the typeface and its foundations, color palette, components, effects, and how to use certain elements.

Biometric Patch

Patch

huddle's patch allows for athletes and coaches to monitor health during games, practices, and anytime in between. Athletes are given the choice of sharing their data, allowing them to have privacy when it comes to specific data.
